Plitvice Lakes National Park is the first and most popular and the reputedly national park in Croatia, world’s natural heritage that is on the UNESCO Heritage List, since 1979. It is best-known for the 16 interconnected lakes by cascades and waterfalls. The park is simply beautiful. Located in the Lika, covering the region that is bordered by mountains Mala Kapela, Medveđak and Gornja Plješevica, National Park extends over an area 30 thousand hectares (about 300 square kilometers). The park is also populated by bears, wolves, otters, rabbits, foxes and numerous bird species. The region is established as a National Park in 1949., declaring Plitvice Lakes as the area of exceptional natural beauty. The best way to explore the park is to take a walking tour around, starting from the very top. The walking route is solid and wide – perfectly safe for the tourist. On the tour, take the higher route to capture beautiful panoramic pictures of the lakes. The place feels almost surreal!
